Oval People: 1 year in Oval for Mattia, Front-End Developer

As part of our onboarding process, we ask each perspective employee to send a short bio and we publish it on our internal dashboard for everybody to get to know the person a bit beforehand. Mattia's description included a passion for cutting edge technology and food.

I still remember the day he joined Oval and how coherent that was with his description: there was a bunch of croissants in the morning and salami, wine, bread and cheese as aperitivo! His passion for cutting edge technology had already come out during his interview, showing a great competence and experience in software development, but it was fully shown on day 2 when he arrived on board of a futuristic unicycle!

One year of Mattia, in numbers:

📀 1000+ km in an electric unicycle
⚽️ 10 soccer matches organised
🔀 9 design patterns dominated

  1. What was your idea of Oval before joining the team?
Oval intrigued me because it seemed an almost non-Italian reality, both in terms of product innovation and of market positioning.
  2. After a year in Oval, how has this idea changed?
It hasn't changed! I think Oval is still a very innovative product that in 2020 will improve even more!
  3. What was the biggest challenge you faced in Oval this year?
It was challenging to immerse myself in a completely different working environment from what I was used to: having worked mainly for big enterprises, the world of startups was unknown to me... but fascinating!
  4. What aspect of the team impressed the most you when you arrived in Oval and why?
Certainly the approach of my current colleagues towards product development: they are the first users of Oval, but they're also demanding beta testers :)
  5. What did you want to do when you were a child?
My passion for IT has been strong ever since I started using the first computers. I didn't do computer science at university, but only because I was pawing to start working!
  6. What was the best gift you ever received? And the worst?
I could say a computer, but in reality the best gift was a Death Star model: being a Star Wars fan it was really the best! The worst? The various ciapapuer (editor's note: dialect form for dust-catcher, or in other words ornaments).
  7. What characterises your desk?
My desk is now famous for the presence of a statuette of my guide animal ... the goat! This animal is associated with the desire to climb the summit and wisdom to avoid all obstacles in its path.
  8. Do you see yourself in these superpowers?
What I consider my strong point is to find solutions to simple but above all maintainable problems. Thinking about it, even bringing together at least a dozen people for soccer matches is a superpower!
  9. And what is your biggest weakness?
I should be less critical, I sometimes exaggerate (but I'm working on it)
  10. Tell us about one of your most exciting moments in Oval.
Definitely the Lisbon retreat! Having the opportunity to travel with the whole team and get to know each other better is an opportunity that few places can offer you.
  11. If you could live anywhere, where would you go?
I would go to Iceland, a magical place, seemingly out of this world! And maybe I could continue to work for Oval remotely!
  12. What do you dream of being remembered for?
I would like to make an effective contribution to the world of information technology, especially in the Javascript world. I know that it is not easy to leave a trace given the multitude of people who work in this area, but if we talk about dreams I can say it!
