Whether you’re working two (or three!) jobs, trying to care for a family member, or trying to make it all work on your own, there are so many pressures you face on a daily basis that it can all start to feel like too much. Either the money won’t stretch far enough, or you don’t have enough time to think, or sometimes you sacrifice precious hours of sleep in order to take on another shift at your side job. You are constantly pushing yourself to keep it all going and keep it together and at some point it’s just going to have to give.

The human body isn’t a machine and it needs time to rest and recuperate, so here are 6 things to do that might make life that little bit easier on yourself and ensure you stay in control.

1. Ask for help when you need it

No matter what you need help with, there will be a trained expert ready to be found. Maybe you have money troubles, or you need some help sleeping, or maybe you just need someone to install a new washing machine. Whatever you need there will always be an advice service or trained expert in the field, so you don’t need to do anything alone. Always assess your situation and ask yourself “do I need help with this?”

There’s never any shame in asking for help. There are 7 billion people on this planet; you’re not expected to be the best at everything.

2. Organisation is God

Whether it’s managing your commute time or making sure the house isn’t a disaster to come home to, being organised makes all the difference.

If you have a long commute then try using it to organise some life admin, pay bills or answer emails. Similarly, coming home to a house that looks like a bomb has gone off in it can be really disheartening, so instead of taking on all housework at once, try to separate different chores into different days. It will make cleaning easier, and if you miss one day then it’s only one part of the house that suffers, instead of everything.

Get yourself a personal organiser, or download a good diary app for your phone. Put all your appointments, shifts, and reminders; everything you can think of into that one diary. That way you only need to check that one place in order to know exactly what is going on each day, and you won’t be stressed out trying to carry it all around in your head.

3. Find a release

Maybe you’re a sportsman, or a salsa dancer, or maybe you just like to kick back with your friends over a bottle of wine. It doesn’t matter what makes you happy, just make sure that you find it and that you do it regularly.

When you’re working two jobs, or have other commitments, it can be difficult to find free time to indulge in something that is ‘just for you’, but doing something that makes you truly happy is key to improving your quality of life. This will be reflected in all other areas of your life too, from your productivity at work, to your ability to think positively and stay focused, even to how much money you can commit to saving each month.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, remember.


4. Reward yourself sometimes

A ‘reward’ doesn’t have to equal a new car; sometimes it can just be with a dinner out, or a coffee with a friend. Reward is not necessarily something of monetary values, what’s important is the mental process; it’s you telling yourself that you are doing well and you deserve to be treated well or do something that makes you happy. By doing this you will feel happier and more in control.

5. Surround yourself with your tribe

People who think like you and who are proud of you and kind to you, are key to your success and happiness. If you’re trying to get out of debt then spend time with your more frugal friends. If you’re trying to achieve at work then get inspiration from your friends who are truly motivated hard workers.

Doing something alone is much more difficult, so look for the support of others. By surrounding yourself with people who share the same goals it will be easier to focus on what you want and achieve it.

6. Limit digital exposure

We are exposed to 4,000 adverts a day! 4,000!! Take a second to let that sink in. That is just an incredible amount of visual and psychological bombardment. How are we ever supposed to feel content with what we have or who we are when we are told 4,000 times a day that there is something else we should be doing, or need to buy, in order to reach that peak happiness.

For this reason, try and reduce the amount of time you spend on the computer or watching the TV; even watching your favourite show on Netflix, the hero will be drinking coke and wearing Ray Ban glasses. Try to engage in behaviour that doesn’t expose you to any marketing or brand messages for a small portion of each day. It’s difficult to feel that you are doing well and are happy when you are constantly being exposed to these messages.
