As far as we're concerned, World Smile Day is one hell of a good thing to celebrate. In a world where it’s easy to feel overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated it’s nice to have a day given over to purely being cheery and kind to others.
The history behind world smile day started with the famous yellow smiley face created by the artist Harvey Ball.
The symbol is now synonymous with good cheer and happy vibes and is used all over the world. Harvey himself created the day in order to ensure that for at least one day a year people actually embraced the true meaning of his symbol by being kind to each other and just giving each other a smile.
There are loads of ways to celebrate the day, and we at Oval have thrown together a bunch of our favourite ideas for you to try out.
1. Make yourself smile
You can’t make others happy unless you’re happy! Do something kind for yourself and make yourself smile. Maybe cook your self an awesome breakfast to start the day, or treat yourself to something nice after work; like time spent with friends, or a little quiet time at home with a glass of wine and a book. Just do something to make yourself happy.
2. Make a friend or family member smile
Friends and family are pretty key to our happiness, so why not use this day as an excuse to be a little sappy and tell your friends they matter to you, or just try to make them laugh and enjoy the day.
One way of doing this is by inviting them to download Oval Money with your exclusive referral code. This will earn both you and them £5 in 'free' money that goes straight into your savings account. What's not to smile about?
3. Make a stranger smile
There’s always someone you come across during your day who smiles at you and you probably cast your eyes down and keep going. Maybe today, smile back! It could be a co-worker you don’t know that well, the guy who gives you your coffee in the morning, or the ticket inspector on the train. After all, we’re all in this together.
4. Random act of kindness
Honestly, not that hard to do. We're not suggesting you turning into Mother Teresa, just, you know, help someone pick up stuff they drop on the floor, or maybe don't use the last of your housemate's milk. Start small.
5. Bank up smiles for later
This one is a good shout. Invest in this day and do stuff that will pay off down the line, and make you smile later on. Plan a day trip with some mates for the coming week, or put some money in your savings for a day down the line when you might really need it.
Future you is already thanking current you.
6. Find a local world smile day event – or hold one yourself.
This all depends on how into this whole thing you actually are, but there’s no harm in attending an event where everyone is there purely to make each other happy, right? It could be fun. Have a look around and see what is going on in your local area. Maybe there’s something that appeals to you.
7. Hide away until the whole day is over.
Our super cheery team member threw this one in to the mix. World Smile Day and all the general good cheer might not be your thing after all. If that’s the case then grab a pizza and a six pack and hunker down with a box set until October 7th rolls round and it’s all over. (Although, if doing this makes you smile, then… see number 1 on this list…)
Making other people happy, in turn tends to make up happy
