Vive la France!
The 14th July means it’s Bastille Day! And if you are in France then that means a day off work and a full day spent celebrating Liberté, égalité and fraternité! (More importantly you would also be celebrating my birthday… but I don’t want to steal the show here.)
Sadly, for the rest of us, there is no national holiday in sight. However, there are still plenty of great ways to embrace the French spirit of celebration without putting too much pressure on your wallet.
Join a Bastille Day party in London
Kensington High Street and Borough Market famously throw annual Bastille Day parties for all the Francophiles in London. You can usually find a great party atmosphere, live music, great food, and great French wine. Get involved and make your way over to one of these great events. They’re free entry so you can spend as little or as much as you like all day!
Wine and cheese night
If you’re a fan of staying in then put together your own French cheese board, buy a gorgeous full bodied bottle of French red, slap on a beret and, voila! Instant indoor French feeling.
Bake pastries and decorate your home with tricolour bunting!
In the same vein, if you really want to enter into the spirit of it you could invite a few mates over, cook some amazing tricolour macaroons, string up some bunting, and bring the festivities across the channel into your front room!
Nothing says ‘wild celebrations’ like fireworks! It’s not exactly equivalent to lighting up the Eifel Tower, but it’s still loads of fun. Have a mini pyrotechnics show in your back garden. (Alternatively, light a few sparklers and have a bonfire if the budget won’t stretch!) Just remember to be careful when lighting them!
Go to France!!
You can get a coach from London to Paris for £7.98.
Why are you still here?!
